Aided by richly detailed but not overdone production, Off the Wall redefined how much Michael might do. Tracks like "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough," "Rock with You," the title cut (all Top 10 singles), and "Burn this Disco Out" not only consolidated his dance-floor power, but showed just how soulful and varied his vocals could get on uptempo material. Artistic role models like James Brown and Jackie Wilson echo through the mixes, but these were Jackson's leaps forward. The addition of pure pop confection--Paul McCartney's "Girlfriend," Stevie Wonder's "I Can't Help It"--further fleshed out the star's young-adult persona and helped make Off the Wall among the most fondly remembered of all his solo work. Different Shades Of Blue (J&R Adventures) is Bonamassa's first studio album in two years and the first album of his career to feature all original material. The result is a record with more of an experimental edge than previous Bonamassa records. It s a blues record that explores the outer reaches and the many different sounds that shape the genre. 'It s been a while since I've been involved in the writing on an entire album. So I decided I wanted to make a completely original blues album', said Bonamassa. 'I've really had to push myself to make everything I do better than the last project. I know the fans expect it. And I feel like I owe it to the fans to give them an original record after all these years'. To prepare for the record, Bonamassa took 2013 off from releasing any new studio material, a rarity in the tireless bluesman's career, and instead spent time in Nashville writing with Jonathan Cain (Journey), known for hits Who s Crying Now, Open Arms, and When You Love A Woman; James House (Diamond Rio, Dwight Yoakam, Martina McBride), and Jerry Flowers (Keith Urban). 'The writers really inspired me, and having access to really great lyricists and songwriters made it such a great experience', said Bonamassa. Recorded at Studio At The Palms in Las Vegas, NV, Different Shades Of Blue was produced by Kevin Shirley (Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin), who has helmed Bonamassa's last fifteen projects including his solo projects and collaborations with Black Country Communion and Beth Hart. Riding with The King brings the two living legends together for an entire album for the first time. When it comes to rockin' blues, Riding With The King is as great as it will ever get. If this is a musical journey, it's the kind that rolls down long, empty stretches of country highway at 80 miles an hour, with the top down and the stereo blasting. What they do here is cover 12 classic blues songs, many of them staples of King's repertoire, so the title of this album makes sense. The debut release from The Jimi Hendrix Experience is widely regarded as the greatest, most influential debut release from any artist. When first released in 1967, Are You Experienced turned the music world upside down as Hendrix showed everyone exactly what it meant to be 'experienced.'
Another double album (and a great one, too!) squeezed on to a single CD or cassette. There has never been a better showcase for improvisational rock than this 1971 concert recording, and few (if any) live rock albums are in its rank. With only two studio albums (and plenty of touring) under their belt, the Georgia sextet tore into the Fillmore East with road-tested buoyancy. Titanic guitarist Duane Allman was at the peak of his powers, pushing his foil, Dickey Betts, to unsurpassed peaks. Vocalist-keyboardist Gregg Allman would have been a star in any other setting; here he's merely one more component in a brilliant ensemble. Duane Allman died shortly after At Fillmore East shipped, and the Brothers haven't scaled such heights since. But, then, neither has anyone else. --Steven Stolder
Double LP 2008 reissue on 180-gram vinyl. Few live albums are as revered as The Allman Brothers Band's "Live at the Fillmore East." More than just the raw energy on stage and from the crowd, it is the electric, jazz-like interplay between the performers that sets a high bar for jam bands to reach. The impeccable rhythm blended with masterful instrumental work, keeps fans coming back for more. Most noteworthy are the dueling lead guitars of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, and the instrumental byplay between Duane and his brother Gregg on the keyboards. Taken from a series of live shows in San Francisco recorded in March of 1971, "Live at the Fillmore East" was an instant classic. It became the band's high watermark, but was tragically followed by the motorcycle deaths of Duane and bassist Berry Oakley. This double vinyl reissue was pressed in 2008 on audiophile-quality, 180-gram vinyl.
